Che Lai Clay Labs is the ceramic practice of artist AnnieChe, whose work begins with a way of seeing rather than a fixed aesthetic. Annie's creative process is rooted in memory. Highly attuned to her surroundings and senses, she experiences recollection not simply as an image, but as a collection of sensations: the feeling of a surface, the character of a material, the atmosphere of a place, the fragments of an experience that remain long after it has passed. Ceramics offers her a way to reconstruct these sensations physically. Each work begins with a thought, a memory or an experience that Annie spends time contemplating before translating it into clay. Through experimentation, texture becomes a form of sensory remembrance — a way of giving physical presence to something that would otherwise remain intangible. The process is deliberate, but never entirely controlled. Annie approaches clay as a collaboration: guiding its form while allowing the material to retain its own temperament. Cracks, irregularities, warping, unexpected surfaces and the unpredictable behaviour of firing are not imperfections to be corrected, but expressions of the material itself. They become part of the work's character, reflecting an acceptance of impermanence and the beauty of what cannot be perfectly controlled. For this reason, Che Lai Clay Labs is not defined by a singular visual language. Annie's collections shift, evolve and occasionally contradict one another, reflecting the changing nature of her thoughts and creative impulses. Each collection represents a particular moment in an ongoing creative journey rather than a fixed identity. What remains constant is not the form of the work, but the process behind it: observation, remembrance, experimentation and translation. This resistance to permanence extends to the question of function. Annie is interested in the beauty of things that do not necessarily need to be useful — objects whose value can exist in their presence, texture and aesthetic experience alone. Her work does not seek to conform to trends or predetermined ideas of what ceramics should be. It is guided instead by curiosity and authenticity. Ultimately, the work is an invitation to enter Annie'sconsciousness, but not simply to understand it. Each piece carries traces of a thought, a sensation or a remembered experience, allowing the viewer to follow a fragment of Annie's own stream of consciousness. Yet the narrative remains open. Objects from different collections may exist together, collide or form unexpected relationships, allowing each person to construct a story of their own.
‍There is no single Che Lai Clay Labs aesthetic. There is a continuous way of thinking, feeling and making — translated, moment by moment, into clay.
